Great initial idea, but bad management and poor decisions made it not a good place to work

I worked at Betfair as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Used to have great reputation in the e-gaming industry. The teams are young and enthusiastic. Casual wear is allowed. All perks such as food, parties, clubs, office plants are gone after the latest reorganization the rumour has it.

    Cons

Over-layered managerial structure, where priority is placed on reporting rather than actual delivery. Frequent change of strategy lead to lack of focus. The company did 2 waves of lay offs in the last couple of months and a lot of talented employees were let go as a consequence of office politics and severe cuts. The company culture is ruthless, you either fit in or you are out. The working environment varies with the different departments - while IT and Operations could be good to join, Commercial should be avoided. There is plenty to be desired from the HR as there are no career progression programs, and employees are rarely coached or mentored. Stepping the career ladder can be achieved if you leave and apply for a different position, but rarely from within. Motivation is very low among the work force, and this reflects on the output.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rethink the bureaucratic layered organisational structure, and invest in your employees.

Fantastic place to work - about 5 years ago.....

I have been working at Betfair full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting industry and good technology - some great people

    Cons

Not recommended for project managers or programme managers. There is no PMO or central resource management - so you are at the mercy of the division you are hired within. Limited opportunity to move around and no clear career path or project management specific career development... fine if you are contracting however.
New CEO is the Michael O'Leary of the gambling industry.... the cost cutting exercise is fairly ruthless. victims so far:
    Office Fruit
    All Staff Christmas Party
    Kids Christmas Party
    Free Racing Post
    Office plants!!
Free hooded top for new starters passing their probation
    Staff joining anniversary lunches
    Online training portal
Funding for clubs (running, cycling, wine clubs etc)
Betfair used to be a really fun place to work - it was in the top ten places to work about 5/6 years ago (they tell you this when you apply to work there). It hasn't featured in the top 10 since, with good cause. The stock market float has changed the company dramatically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cutting costs is important - but look at some of the big list items ahead of staff perks. People aren't drones - and its the small things that often drive engagement and motivation.
