Pros

great place to gain experience; go through change management processes and technically challenging projects

Cons

a bit political sometimes and you need strong influencing skills to get around

Advice to Management

find the right organizational structure and do not change it every year

    Pros

Location (if you live in West London). There are some great people to work with (not always easy to find though!)

    Cons

Highly political environment, lack of clearly communicated vision/strategic direction, very poor internal communications. Not a fun working environment (which is highly ironic, considering it's a gaming company -- felt more stifling and depressing than working for a large bank/conglomerate). A bit of a race to the bottom as poor performers don't get penalized and good employees aren't rewarded (and therefore get frustrated and leave).

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect, not as numbers/cost savings. Reward & make an effort to retain your good employees (it should be pretty obvious who they are). Pay attention to morale - people have many other choices of where to work, you are no longer the *hot* company that everyone is dying to get into. Worry about damage control - you've made 100s of people redundant over the past several months - those former employees are now out in the wild and aren't necessarily painting Betfair in the best light. This will make it very difficult for you to recruit new employees to backfill the void you've created. Remember: people do talk to each other!

    Pros

    - Some very smart people - A cash-rich business that still has a some cache to have worked for - Big projects with lost of moving parts - not for the faint hearted

    Cons

    - Spineless leadership - Rumor-mill communication culture - Hardened cliques among the folk who actually know what they're doing - inevitable given the above - Layer upon layer of pointless middle managemet and process that add no value at all - massive waste

    Advice to Management

Stop hiding out in Dublin and get engaged with your teams. They will tell you what can and can't be done and this way you might have a slim change of ending this cycle of big ideas turning into aborted projects. The tax your saving by being in Dublin is more than outweighed by the cost of not being with your people.
