I worked at Betfair full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Betfair are not afraid to embrace new technologies and processes. sometimes they make mistakes, but that's how you move forward. I've worked with brilliant people there and learned a lot.

Cons

Sometimes the life at Betfair was too chaotic. Some projects had unrealistic timelines that led to long hours and really was affecting my work-life balance. Too many re-orgs.

I have been working at Betfair as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Some very smart people
    - A cash-rich business that still has a some cache to have worked for
    - Big projects with lost of moving parts - not for the faint hearted

    Cons

    - Spineless leadership
    - Rumor-mill communication culture
    - Hardened cliques among the folk who actually know what they're doing - inevitable given the above
    - Layer upon layer of pointless middle managemet and process that add no value at all - massive waste

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiding out in Dublin and get engaged with your teams. They will tell you what can and can't be done and this way you might have a slim change of ending this cycle of big ideas turning into aborted projects. The tax your saving by being in Dublin is more than outweighed by the cost of not being with your people.
