I have been working at Biomet

Pros

Incredibly relaxed, fun and open work atmosphere. Great job hiring new employees and great opportunities for lateral and vertical movement within the company.

Cons

Not quite as big as their major competitors, Zimmer, Depuy, Stryker and Smith & Nephew, however a much more innovative and socially responsible firm.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More feedback to employees on a regular basis. More on campus amenities such as a better cafeteria or a fitness room.

Biomet is a very political company consisting of the good ole boys club. You are either in the club or you are not.

I have been working at Biomet

    Pros

It's a job. You can wear shorts to work. Only 2 reasons that I can think of.

    Cons

Very political company. Good ole boys club - females are paid considerably less than males. Stock options are given to some, but not all in similiar positions. Biomet has alot of very arrogant people that work there. It's like there is a club and you are in it or not in it. Upper management runs the company like a ma & pa sweat shop with very little interaction, direction, or feedback. For the companies I have worked for since graduating from college, I truely have to say Biomet is lacking good management, low benefits, little respect for people, integrity and a genuine caring attitude. I have never been associated with a company that is so lacking of consistency in rules and regulations from one employee to the next. It is ok for some to do things a certain way...but others not in the club it is not ok. It is very tough to work in an environment where the rules aren't consistent for everyone. There is also an attitude within Biomet that knowledge is power.....so if you have the information no one will share it with you. There is a constant fear and intimidation factor that plays into some employees within the company where they do not want others to be successful out of fear of loosing their own position. It is a very tough environment to be in. If you are up for the challenge then go for it...but my personal advice is stay as far away from this company as possible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show an attitude of appreciation and care that is genuine to your employees. Talk the talk and walk the walk. Mnay employees in the Management, Director, Vice President level need to change. There are truely many individuals that are over their heads in positions they have no idea what they are doing. Someone needs to come into this company and sweep house and move in leaders that lead with Integrity and Respect. Their is an arrogance of protection among those who have never signed non-competes that their jobs are protected. There is also an arrogance among many employees of constant dis-respect in the work place. There is never a place for this in any business environment. To make the record strait I am not referring to Mr. Binder in any of these comments I have made.

I have been working at Biomet

    Pros

    - Good opportunity to break into the industry
    - Good place to develop basic job knowledge for your next big career move... it's a good building block for the next step.

    Cons

    - Cynical management
    - Limited opportunities for advancement if you're not in Marketing or Engineering
    - Very uncompetitive pay, well below the industry standards
    - Virtually no company culture
    - No communication between departments
    - Inconsistent policies with their hourly vs. salary team members (i.e. a point system that penalizes hourly people for being literally 5 minutes late to work, yet absolutely no attendance standard for salaried team members. Or a disability policy that covers practically nothing for an hourly team member, but 100% for salaried)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing the people within the organization in order to prevent people from leaving. A lot of good people leave the company because they don't see any opportunity for growth. There are no development plans for regular team members, the focus of the company is primarily for succession of management.

The policies need to be less punitive for hourly team members, and more balanced with the entire company in mind. The existing policies tend to be primarily negative for hourly team members, with little to no effect on salaried team members. Regardless of pay grade or employment status, we should all be held to the same standards.
