On the right track, but needs some IT updates and modernized corporate culture...

Manager (Current Employee) Overland Park, KS

Pros- Great salary and benefits
- Broad opportunity for travel, relocation, and career advancement
- Stability (been around since 1915)
- Good marketing material
- Prides itself on quality and value, not lowest-price and satisfactory/average product/service
- Have not witnessed micro-management

Cons- Disorganized intranet and web tools, information spread out among different locations and is decentralized
- Clinging to a paper filing system instead of a more efficient electronic document control
- Poor delegation from middle management, lack of empowerment
- Many poor performers aren't fired because their knowledge and skill make them "untouchable" in a given position. Said performers know this and milk their status.
- Older corporate culture prevents current business trends such as teleworking, relaxed business dress, embracing of social media, etc.
- Lockdown of many mainstream websites claiming the myth of "bandwidth waste" (i.e. YouTube, Pandora, many news video feeds, etc.)

Advice to Senior ManagementForm a tiger team to take a hard look at the IT infrastructure and look for loopholes/weaknesses in intranet design, old internal websites/pages left up by mistake, and multiple versions of the same policies and procedures. Big need for upper level leadership buy-in of electronic documentation and reduction of paper printing (waste). A formal, corporate decision should be made on the move from paper files to electronic files. More effort should be placed on firing poor performers and weeding out weak links. This can be solved by tougher recruiting efforts (look at how accounting firms recruit such as Deloitte, etc.). Trust the web surfing of your employees. Embrace the new norm of social media and use it to your advantage. Locking down morale building websites such as Pandora doesn't prevent their use (e.g. smartphone, AM/FM radio, CD, etc.). The bandwidth these sites use are minimal.
