    Pros

Awesome people. Great culture. Very collegiate atmosphere. Many fun, cross functional projects. Many opportunities to change your position after a few years, though this is usually a lateral move. Blackboard has the majority of market share which makes it quite a contender in the space.

    Cons

Difficult obstacles in place to get promoted to director, senior director, vp and svp levels because of review by committee in place (i.e. the decision is not up to your manager). No real formal feedback given on what you need to work on to get promoted. Lower levels are within Managers reach so they aren't so bad.

    Advice to Management

The review by committee at the senior levels was acceptable when Blackboard was a smaller company. The company has outgrown this model and needs a new review process for promoting above Director level than the one currently in place. Should be less about your relationships with people on that committee and more about data and metrics. Also, would be great if salary discussion and performance reviews were done in conjunction with each other. (Right now salary discussions about raises, etc.) are done as an afterthought almost a 1 or 2 months after performance reviews. It's very odd.

experience in culture of a large company

    Cons

informal cliques determine what get done
poor communication from mid level mgmt about strategy

    Advice to Management

it's OK to not be Apple
it's not OK to ignore (for the most part) the student experience
it's disheartening to have people say they are forced to use your software
