I have been working at Blackhawk Network

    Pros

    - good location; Blackhwak attracts a lot of talents from the Tri Valley are
    - job security (well, sort of). Virtually no lay offs and still a growing company despite market conditions

    Cons

    - terrible environment to work in: management who YELLS and do not hold themselves accountable for errors. CMA and pointing fingers are the norms at Blackhawk
    - problem is persistent: from top management down to line-level staff (of course, this simply demostrates that it comes straight from the top)
    - management style (or lack thereof): manage by "hind sight" and all around firedrill approach
    - no work life balance: there's a concept of a 24x7 workday. Do what it takes but you will NOT be rewarded... OT? Nope! Comp time? Nope! Bonus? Nope!
    - Execs and management are compensated well (high pay, bonus, more vacation, perks) but mid to line staff get ZILCH
    - Personnel: which, brings me to my next topic: that Blackhawk simply DO NOT value their #1 asset... The people.
    - benefits not competitive at all: no 401k match. 2-wks vacation. 12-sick days a year that you really cannot use. No bonus for Director or below. No stock option.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start treating your employees as the #1 most valuable asset. Improve benefits.

    I worked at Blackhawk Network

    Pros

The product is good, the evolution of the company is interesting, and the employees see no translation of it in salaries or incentives.
    Location is great.

    Cons

    Disrespectful Management.
The work environment is harsh because what is requested to employees is to work without the necessary tools to achieve unrealistic goals.
Partners are usually impressed about how tough is the treatment on the phone of some Managers towards employees. I have encountered unprepared Managers that were qualified to deploy their Projects and had a proven record of it but had ZERO Management skills. I have seen unacceptable behaviors of Management within this company. Human Resources does nothing to protect employees from inappropriate management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think as a Manager in the Market not within a Safeway partially owned company. 2010 Management needs to be opened to feedback of all employees, be inclusive end your favoritisms, be competitive, listen to the feedback that people working for the lowest salaries has to give you. If you do not listen, they will leave, and they do.
