I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

Pros

There's a lot of media reports about working at Bloomberg, especially in the news division and most of them are exaggerated. A lot is expected, but comp is based on performance - not seniority.

Cons

Long hours (although not as long as reported). There is pressure to get work done quickly at times. There has been a cut back in expenses.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice would be to keep it up with expansion plans. Bring in more seasoned reporters. Increase branding by buying the naming rights of a baseball stadium.

Highly stressful "big brother" culture, "subjective" reviews, "lifer" management with lack of leadership capabilities.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

    Pros

20 days of vacation, very defined roles, many people doing the same type of jobs.

    Cons

Inexperienced managers, highly "micro-managed" environment where your hourly tasks are published on a firm-wide schedule where everyone can check what you are doing. Mandatory badge in/badge out system viewable by everyone at the firm. No one has a cubicle so expect to work in desks where you are side by side with colleagues. There are no cafeterias or places where you can eat lunch, strategically devised so you will have to eat at your desks. If you are someone who needs rigid structure and micromanagement, this is the place for you! Many "lifers" stay because the company rewards loyalty- the longer you stay at the firm, you will be incrementally rewarded, which creates countless "lifer" management who have little diverse expertise as they this is the same job they have held for 20 years since college.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be less risk-averse and experience another company other than Bloomberg.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

    Pros

Pay is decent when factoring in bonuses
Benefits are better than most employers in the financial industry
    Work Life Balance is acceptable

    Cons

Upper Management does not communicate to employees and often makes decisions "in the dark" that do not make sense
Policy is not applied equally to all departments specifically work from home
Management promotes from within based on politics and not abilities or knowledge
    Favoritism is common practice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start hiring senior executives from outside the organization as these individuals can bring vast knowledge and experience that is typically missing in most departments
