I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Great place to start your career. Ability to learn from very bright people and work on projects that make a difference.

Cons

Position is temporary with virtually no opportunity to get promoted for even those that exhibit talent and solid work ethic. Many full-time employees hardly ever acknowledge contract staff as deserving enough to breathe in the same air as them even though they are bright young people feeling the effects of the economy.

Advice to Management

Reward those that have shown the necessary ability to contribute within the company.

    Pros

Fantastic learning opportunities/extensive training. You'll meet a lot of great people.

    Cons

You won't make a lot of money, even when you bring in revenue. There's an arrogance from the top, that the lowly sales person doesn't make it happen that the brilliant product sells itself and you're fortunate to be there, so they judge you on petty metrics that don't translate to revenue. There's an enormous lack of trust, you're treated like a child. Big brother looms. It's reminiscent of 1984.

    Advice to Management

Measure sales people success on sales, give people a sense of ownership and motivation, not a pat on the back and some silly award. Stop micromanaging people and have a little faith in the people that you hire.

Not a place for good programmers. Hacking is encouraged.

    Pros

Fast-paced work; Dull moments are rare. But that's becase ... (see "Cons").

    Cons

Bad programmers abound. Emphasis is on rolling out software that's quickly written and does its job with no concern for software standards. I'm amazed how much untested software is rolled out to customers every week. Customers are used for testing. Very political atmosphere. Top management encourages competition between different teams, resulting in vitiated atmosphere. Company has grown very big and is dragged in different directions Core product ("The Terminal") has hit a plateau and things will be difficult unless radical innovations happen.

    Advice to Management

Allocate more time to each project and build a better product. Have a long-term vision of what your product is going to be and stick to it.
