I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Great benefits, Diverse and friendly culture/environment, Strong client base, Opportunity for internal mobility, Good resources available through various internal teams/colleague's backgrounds

Cons

Many employees are in-the-box thinkers more taking orders than taking ownership. Several employees break down barriers while there are many more just coming in for their 8-5pm day. Very metrics driven - to the point of it being a negative in most employee's eyes.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your top performers better. Pay your mediocre employees less (and fire them more often.)

You are an innovative company with impressive products - make sure you retain and attract top talent where it's needed to stay relevant. Can't rely on terminal business forever.

    Pros

Health benefits are great. 401k, vacation time are better than average. Other than that there really are no pros to working at Bloomberg.

    Cons

I worked at Bloomberg for about a year. From the time I started my marketability went straight down. As a developer you will become completely useless to any other company in short order. You will likely work with outdated things like Fortran, Cobol or even Bloomberg's proprietary RDMS. They actually think little Bloomberg can outdo Oracle with their millions of man hours invested. Management in software development is completely clueless about everything computer science related. This is a place where management worries about what time you come in and building little clicks to start problems where there are none. If something "bad" happens to any part of the software in your group be expected to have a meeting where 10% of the time will be spent on fixing the problem, 90% of the time spent on figuring out "who to blame" and 0% time will be spent on figuring out how to prevent it again. The place is run like big brother, security is watching you everywhere and the DO READ every email message you send or receive on your private email accounts - use your cell phone only! If you are unfortunate to have taken a position there you would be advised to keep your options open if another position comes along at another company. The longer you stay there the more damage you are doing to your career.

Learn some modern day working environments for software development.
