I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

Pros

Strong group of quants, smart interesting people, interesting work, lots of room to learn new things (although not much time to do it). This is a great place to start.

Cons

No positions in the company means you cannot grow careerwise. Salary also peaks off at some point and stops growing. Lots depends on the manager as well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

honoring the regular programmers, recognizing hard work and achievement and thanking for it

Fast paced and exciting, but not a software specialist's dream

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

    Pros

The company seems to take reasonably good care of you, with a good compensation package and benefits, and a bright lively working environment. There is a lot of expertise around to learn from if your objective is to develop an understanding of financial markets. The work is fast paced and you will seldom find yourself bogged down in your job. The ability to handle pressure, look at problems from a business perspective is valued. Good kitchens.

    Cons

Code base is old and can be frustrating at times. Core technical people, who want to develop their technical skill set will be put off by the demand to get the solution out to customers, often sacrificing quality. If you're in a team that works on legacy products rather than new ones, the skills you pick up will be in proprietary techs that are not transferable. The flat hierarchy, (3 levels from new fresh-from-college hire to the head of R&D) may not leave room for advancement that you can show on your resume.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that even though thinking like a financial service company instead of a software company has paid off so far, there will come a time when the old old software core will catch up with the growth rate of the code base. For new, young engineers, there is too much that is set in tradition in the manner of working.

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P.

    Pros

Nice office. People on my team are quite competent. Free snacks and drinks. Total compensation is pretty good. The company is rapidly growing recently. Good place to work for programmers.

    Cons

Work/life balance is not very good on my team: often people work at least 10 hours a day. Priority on my project is about making something for delivery rather than correct code. In the future maintenance would be a problem. Company is too relying on the arcane terminal to run their internal operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company places a lot of emphasis on employee wellness which is good. But to achieve that senior management should look into work and life balance as well.
