I worked at Bloomingdale's

Pros

If you are looking to break into the fashion industry, you can learn a lot from the company.

It is an ok job for students (especially those who want to get into advertising, business, fashion, or related careers).

Retail is a good area to have experience as it trains you how to deal well with people.

Exposure to all of the latest trends, fashions.

Gratis in cosmetics and clothing departments.

Hourly pay is pretty decent for retail.

Cons

Glass ceiling: store associates are not allowed to take corporate training classes, e.g. computer, professional development.

Shady management: there are monetary rewards for opening credit accounts as well as assisting with fraud prevention, however management will do their best to get out of paying.

Upward mobility from stores to corporate Bloomingdale's and Macy's is impossible. Once you are a sales associate, you are always labelled as sales or merchandising. People will end up in the stores years and not end up promoted into corporate.

If you work draw vs. commission, your pay is very inconsistent. You can go periods where you will be working fulltime yet not be able to afford to live, esp. in the summer months when most NY cientele are in the Hamptons.

Discount does not always make the products sold very accessible to store employees.

Overall a lot of pressure from management to purchase from the store, esp. during periodic cosmetics discounts.

Not a lot of flexibility with schedule. If you are a student and end up having one class left before graduation on a weekend, management will not make any exceptions to adjusting your schedule.

Management and security will not always back up associates when there is a belligerent/problem customer.

Hazardous conditions in stock rooms are not taken seriously by management.

The terms of your health insurance policy may change, yet HR will fail to inform you.

Management does not always treat vendors with respect, yet vendors bend over
backwards to be able to sell in their stores.

Antiquated computer and office equipment.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not sacrifice the wellbeing of employees for the needs to customers.

Respect is a two way street. If you show it to your employees and vendors, it will come back to you tenfold.
