I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

Pros

Local management looks after their employees
The benefits are fair
It is a jeans and t-shirt environment
Employees work hard and play hard
There is a fitness room with weights, an elliptical, treadmill, etc

Cons

Fires have to be continually put out
Required communication to do the job correctly is not always shared
Firewalls deployed continually cause major outages
Too much work for one person
Finally the company is doing better than ever and yet they are continually downsizing and expecting personnel to do more with less. Furthermore depending on the group they eliminate the senior personnel and leave an an experienced junior engineer to fill in the gaps.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Protect your people and your talent
When issues arise show transparency rather than blindsiding employees with additional job expectations or unrealistic expectations
Back your managers and team leads when they communicate that they need more people to do the job or need to retain the talent they currently have

    I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Good communication throughout the company. Recognition given for a job well done. Management encourages to leave your computer at home when you go on vacation.

    Cons

    Being a global company, sometimes you need to have calls at odd times but that seems to be the new normal.

    Keep listening to the employees. A happy employee is a productive employee.

    I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Gartner MQ leader. Good people (individual contributors), and good customer base.

    Cons

    Management is solely focused on acquiring companies, analyzing the business, and prepping it for sale, and not on the broken areas - engineering bugs, support, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Lose the analysis paralysis; listen to your people, stop the micromanagement, and fix the stuff that is broken.
