A Toxic Place to Work

Pros

The benefits are very good. Full medical, dental, vision, tuition reimbursement. Management does contribute toward these benefits while UAW employees do not, but the employee contribution is reasonable at this point.

Cons

Interdepartmental communication is abhorrent, and "slackers" abound. Although the current move to streamline procedures and cut costs had made some difference, the company is still processing problem claims ineffeciently, as they move from department to department in an attempt to get tthe payment to the provider or subscriber. There is unmasked tension between support departments and the front-line customer service areas. These support areas just can't understand the need to service customers effeciently. The company is still using systems that are outdated. Time to join the 21st century.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr, Loepp, LISTEN to what your customers are telling you, and actively seek out opinions of front line employees. Make yourself more visible in the customer service areas. You have an abundance of excellent and hardworking people there who are forced to work without one system which is the "source of truth" for customers. The delay in the implememtation of the new operating system is unforgivable, and every day it continues to be delayed, the competition is gaining. Encourage an atmosphere of "what you know" and not "who you know".

    Pros

    If you can get an administrative position, the work is routine, you can't get fired unless they downsize.

    Cons

    No incentive for excellence. Poor communication overall.

    Don't hitch your career to the BCBSM wagon

    Pros

    BCBSM may be good for someone right out of college. There are usually lots of positions open since they are routinely getting rid of folks over 50. Few are able to work from home and almost everyone gets a desk, telephone and computer. If development is needed, there is no need to worry since micro management is rewarded.

    Cons

    BCBSM lacks interest in pursuing excellence. They have a national reputation for lack of innovation, which can be a disadvantage when seeking a position outside of the company. Senior executives are many in number, but few are held accountable and fewer yet collaborate across divisions, which provides for slow moving projects that often do not result in forward momentum. Directors are rewarded for micro management, little progress and performing at status quo. Managers not empowered to make changes. There is a poor atmosphere for growth and development. The good ol' boy network is alive and well. White males are promoted; minorities are rarely promoted. Few staff work up to their potential. Overall, there is a poor organizational culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rethink the number of senior executive positions. Adopt international vision for business (especially since there are a number of international customers). Allow more people to work from home. Better balance of work and home life. Improve fairness in promotions of minorities. Collaborate with other companies that have been recognized as "best places to work." Be the best non-profit you can be; serve the greatest number of Michigan citizens that can be served. Quit wasting money on challenges to the state. Spend money more wisely. Conduct more internal audits and hold senior executives accountable.
