I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Dakota

Pros

The pay is slightly above average and benefits were above average, but in the process of being scaled back. Nice facilities, cafeteria, etc. Good lower level employee community. Lower level managers are usually quite good. Performance review system is fairly good, but can fail.

Cons

Advancement is only based on arbitrary criteria, internal promotion is not a priority. Hard or skilled work either goes unnoticed, or can be a liability that prevents you from advancing. If finding a replacement would be difficult advancement may be impossible. Complete disconnect between upper management and employees. Promotions are largely based on social maneuvering over any verifiable performance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop some real avenues for ambitious employees to seek advancement. Start rewarding performance over length of service and skill over personal relationships. Upper management needs to come down from the 2nd floor for reasons other than giving speeches.

    I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Dakota

    Pros

    * They have a great cafeteria.
    * Nice gym.
    * Benefits are ok.
    * Pretty good raises, based on performance.

    Cons

    * Total lack of accountability, ethics, and leadership.
    * If you are talented and motivated this is not the place for you. If you are happy doing mediocre work with less than mediocre managment, this is the place for you.
    * There is so much back-stabbing and pot-stirring you have to isolate yourself to survive.
    * If you do want to advance, make sure you do only mediocre work, otherwise people will be afraid that you will take your job so they won't advance you!
    * Although raises are based on your performance there is a general knowledge that they only "give out" so many "exceeds expectations" and managment has to fight to give you these, so it usually doesn't happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Total re-tool of all managment and company philosophies.

    I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Dakota full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Not much Pros anymore, all benefits and work/life balance is getting less and less.

    Cons

    Benefits / Life/Work Balanace / Career Growth / Pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of the new management who will do anything to boot out the long timers. Management needs to start remembering the company is only as successful as its employees.

    Negative Outlook
