I worked at Blue Nile

Pros

One of the first pureplay's prior to the .com bubble burst that not only made it but was very successful. A strong business model in a very lucrative retail market. A company who knows how to recruit both business and technical talent. Fast paced work environment with cutting edge technology and an innovative market approach

Cons

Somewhat of an immature arrogant company that neither appreciates it's younger to mid level talent nor how to groom or retain. A very bright young dynamic but power drunk CEO who managed to take over the healm from it's bricks and mortars founder, creating a somewhat toxic environment. I understand that has changed with it's newly appointed CEO and who's environment has hopefully improved.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let going public distract you from the roots of your success, your core business model and the backs of the talented brains that helped to deliver the innovation. HR should begin to recognize it's talent rather than it's on-going use and lose policy for the whims and indiscretions of the SMT. Growing pains that will inevitably cost this company a lot.

I have been working at Blue Nile full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great people, good business model, able to make an impact

    Cons

Not enough staff, poor/no training for managers, low pay, lack of innovation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The things that need to change have already been identified. Rather than talk about it, it's about time the staff is beefed up and money is invested in growth. When you say people should take risks and make mistakes, the only thing holding them back is upper management no allowing it.

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO
  2.

Decent company to work for, but little opportunity to move up and poor pay

Good people, good work environment, good work/life balance

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay people what they're worth, promote those that deserve it, and people will stay.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
