I have been working at Blue Shield Of California

Pros

Great company culture, mission, and values. Respect and integrity in the workplace are of the utmost importance in both employee performance, and management performance. Excellent not-for-profit atmosphere,...yes the bottom line counts, but not to fatten any shareholder wallets as in most for profit companies. Blue Shield pumps millions of dollars back into the state of CA through its foundation in grant making to community health care programs, research, etc.

Blue Shield works very hard at hiring and retaining top talent for all of its' employees from the executive level on down. Truly a company that strives to do the right thing, and that places greater value on its people than market share at any cost. A great place to work!

Cons

As with any large company, some processes and upgrades are slow to move. Sometimes (ok, often) overly cautious on the legal and compliance fronts to the detriment of being able to provide quick to market sales materials, and at times, strategic decisions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please tell legal/compliance to loosen up and quit being soooo conservative! Thanks :)

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California

    Pros

One of the largest not for profit organizations in California, blue shield of california is truly committed to its mission: to provide quality, affordable health care to all Californians. People from the top of the organization to the bottom feel good about this mission and it shows. Employees and management are also committed to excellence in their work products and services. The company has evolved in the past few years to a true meritocracy where strong performance is rewarded. blue shield is also driving a lot of change inside and outside the company: as a pioneer in universal health coverage, as a leader in contributing tens of millions of dollars annually to provide health insurance to the under- and un-insured and to prevent domestic violence; the company has completely re-vamped its brand in the marketplace and is investing heavily in making health insurance easy to navigate; finally, blue shield has embarked on a multi-year project to completely replace it's core IT infrastructure--exciting times.

    Cons

Sometimes the culture feels hierarchical. People are sometimes too nice to each other to make and implement a quick decision even when a quick decision is needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to loosen the reigns on the most capable employees and leaders in order to fully realize their potential.
