I worked at Blue Shield Of California

    Pros

Close to BART and Farmer's Market
Mostly friendly co-workers, with a few exceptions
Trying to change the culture, but it won't -- too old school

    Cons

Overall experience depends on your manager -- bad manager = bad day at the office
It's hard to get anything done
Excessive work demands w/o adequate resources
Lots of politics and back=stabbing; managers play favorites
No work-life balance; expected to work whatever hours your project takes
Have to deal with very inexperienced people who don't understand the business
    Siloed beyond belief
Technology is like 10 years behind
Skill sets rot here --not a place for techies who like to keep abreast

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

BSCA has lost some great folks the last three=four years, some departments with as much as 90% turnover -- in a recession! Get your head out of the sand. Remember, the exchange will make some health insurance a commodity, which means you won't be able to offer anything that differentiates your products.
