High-level strategy is clear but not enough detail at next level down to be aligned across organization. Too slow to get aligned and then it's a fire drill to get things done.

    Living out the definition of insanity

    I have been working at Blue Shield Of California

    Pros

    Decent benefits. Have met many associates with a desire to make the company better and more effective. These associates really care about the customer experience and will go out of their way to assist customers facing difficult situations. They live the so-called values of the company. (These associates are not comprised of upper/senior management!)

    Cons

    In an effort to reduce admin costs, positions are being "eliminated" and employees laid off. Reality is the positions are being re-named at lower pay scales and laid off employees are invited to re-apply for those positions...same job responsibilities/less pay. Morale is in the toilet. Upper management surround themselves with "yes" people and their long-standing after work hours buddies, so their decisions are made in a vacuum, limiting their ability to make sound decisions and creating an environment that invites horrendous and costly mistakes. Old, ineffective technology is also harming the company's ability to bercome the leader in the industry it aspires to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Please have enough courage, self confidence and an open mind to really brainstorm solutions with your direct reports and associates. Associates who are more on the front lines really do know a lot about the business and what drives our customers. Rather than lay off the associates who actually make the company work, take a closer look at some of your senior management who consistently make questionnable and costly business decisions and who continue to surround themselves with their same old buddies (making the same old poor business decisions)...Remember what the definition of insanity is!
