Good non-profit health plan with attractive pay, talented people, but ironically, expensive benefits

I worked at Blue Shield Of California full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The pay at Blue Shield of California is moderately high. If you stay at least 3 years with the company as a full time employee you are eligible for a pension based on age and years of service. This is a rare benefit these days.

Cons

In my experience, hiring managers tend to favor cadidates with big-3 consulting company history. As a result, there are a lot of smart people, but also a lack of accountability.

For being a health plan, the employees share of the health benefits are pretty expensive.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instill accountability from the top down and honestly take into consideration rank and file thoughts and opinions.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Very inexpensive HMO health care plan
    -Telecommuting option for some jobs
-Competitive salary (but slightly low), good bonus structure
-Company embraces social media and encourages employees to coalesce

    Cons

-Letter culture. Too much emphasis on degrees and academic accomplishments and not enough on expertise and experience. Everyone puts letters after their names (John Doe, MBA). Greatly divisive elitist culture, Stifles relationship building.
-Shortage of inspiring leaders; surplus of managers and whip-crackers.
-HR essentially non-existent. Virtual only and run by skeleton crew of admins
-Hiring/recruiting process one of the worst in America. They should give "I survived the BSC hiring process" to those who get hired. Seriously.
-Internal training opportunities in areas of leadership, communication, etc non -existent
-Self serving culture where insecure managers do not recognize, share, or shine light on great ideas
-Many departments crippled by legacy software and systems. Some still using DOS apps

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real. Get down in the trenches and instead of doing data deep dives, try doing some culture deep dives to see how dept. managers are treating their people. There is a huge disconnect between what companys says are its values and how many leaders actually act.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Competitive salary, office location, flexible work from home schedule.

    Cons

    Every body for himself/team attitude.
    Extreme silo
Lots of talker, very few doer.
A lot more mangers than the people who actually does anything.
Lack of any company wide standard
Fully depend on outside vendor for all IT functions.
IT managers and leads doesn't know any technology its actually using.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

IT manager and leads needs to know how its own product works.
IT leads should know how to fix issues on the products instead of relying 100% on CTS.
Need a second vendor to provide support instead of 100% relied on CTS,
