I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Benefits, Pay, Flexibility, Opportunity, Good work hours

Cons

Lack of communication from upper management, Favoritism, Loyalty, Encouragement to excel, Lately they have been hiring the bottom of the barrel making the company look unprofessional.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open & honest communication to keep worker bees engaged and convinced that they make a difference. When you see a lot of upper management leaving, you can only presume that they are jumping ship for a reason.

Recommends
Negative Outlook
No opinion of CEO

    Pros

You will be surrounded by Incredibly intelligent and determined professionals. True teamwork mentality and definite knowledge sharing.

    Cons

Midst of a reorganization and uncertainty with the Affordable Care Act. Technology infrastructure is noticeably hampering productivity (Yes IT, I'm looking squarely at the VPN issue AND the intermittent network slowdowns.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay transparent. Communicate often WITH impact to non-leadership employees and explain HOW your decisions affect our day-to-day "work". We're listening.

Current Employee - Program Manager in Woodland Hills, CA

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - great people who are smart, friendly and (mostly) collaborative, most are up front so don't really see back-stabbing
    - good benefits including a pension on top of 401K
    - dynamic new leaders coming in
    - some teams allow working from home and this flexibility can be a big help with work/life balance

    Cons

    - not a lot of mentoring, requires your personal initiative
    - culture varies greatly across the state, make sure you get on a good team
    - huge amount of change going on with transition to new CEO, will take some time to settle down
    - slow to adopt technology (hardware, software and social media)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - think more thoroughly about career paths, it seems like there needs to be more options of job families etc
    - one of the value is being agile but it will take training people to be more courageous risk takers
    - upgrade the technology faster, now and ongoing!! why wait to bring in Office 2007 in 2013??
