I worked at Blue Shield Of California full-time

    Pros

Mission driven organization basically trying to do the right thing. Salaries, bonuses and benefits are fair, not a differentiator though.

    Cons

Company has been through quite a bit of upheaval over the past few years in key areas. Still trying to find its way. Unfortunately, a lot of good folks have left either on their own or with the help of infamous "re-orgs". Company touts that they are dedicated to top talent however, they are listening to unproven new individuals or folks that have been around a while and just know how to work the company politics for individual gain. The company's tools and processes are outdated and they do not appear to be gaining any ground. The basics cause recurring issues which hinders the organization from making progress towards its goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When a group "re-orgs" the majority of it's employees yet immediately posts new positions with the same job responsibilities, there is a problem. Take a look at what your new leadership is actually doing, not just what they are saying. It will only be a matter of time before someone catches on and finds the courage to call the company on it. Employee engagement efforts will only work if you take care of the basics first. Really dig into why top talent is leaving or being moved out. At some point, leaders who have churned through countless talented employees will have to take a look in the mirror instead of casting stones.

A "not-for-profit" with a great mission but all the trappings of a big-money corporation; not dedicated to its employees

I worked at Blue Shield Of California full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    A lot of great employees.

    Cons

Management has been making huge mistakes the past year. The company mission, culture, and values is mostly all talk. A lot of the project managers are way overworked. Morale is terrible right now. Not the best health insurance package I've had.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have many great employees who don't get the appreciation or recognition they deserve. Be as dedicated to them as you expect them to be to the company.
