Pros

The salary and benefits were okay.

Cons

Too much polictics and not enough care for their employees.

Advice to Management

You should offer growth for all employees with or without college degrees. Promotion should be based on years of experiences and good fit within. Look to should interest in their employees and less favoritisms.

    Pros

    - People at the Supervisor level and below somehow stay committed despite the culture
    - The good people are REALLY good
    - The compensation is above average
    - Getting rid of bad performers is surprisingly easy, but sometimes bad things happen to good people.
    - Get a lot of work done with a smaller staff than similar companies
    - A lot of people take pride in the non-profit status
    - A lot of veterans, both recent and not. I'm not one, but its great to see it
    - Bruce is a visionary leader who has the legitimate respect of everyone I know

    Cons

    1.
    Culture is terrible:
    - Every exempt works ridiculous hours (up and down the ladder) so no one gets any credit for it because it needs to come from C-level even if they are doing it themselves.
    - Morale is always low. People don't need to be psyched about work, but coming in shouldn't make you weigh the upsides of alcoholism
    - There is a brain freeze at Director level - VP's I have met seem to have it together given their high level of stress which leads to;
    - The high level of stress for everyone else. It all trickles down.
    - The place doesn't move without Director level sign off and typically requires a whole other project to make them understand.

    2.
    Technology is not bad, but the IT Dept. is way too slow.**I am not in IT**:
    - Once you go through the nightmare of getting funding and priority you can usually get what you want. What is nice, is that the failure of IT is usually so often that when something gets done at twice the timeline and 3x the cost, no one seems to care.

    3.
    Failure, regardless of how much time and effort went into the entire project process, is not tolerated. The biggest goal we miss is about taking calculated risks. A failure gets you fired - end of story. The lessons learned is make the scope as small as possible and say you won't be able to get it done from the start

    4.
    Good people are running for the hills at this place - the only lucky thing going for BSC right now is that Kaiser is the only competitor in SF, so they don't lose a whole lot. But the world of Skype and instant communication will make telecommuting so easy that people can leave BSC and stay in the beautiful Bay Area working from home.

    Advice to Management

    1. Bruce's constant need for detailed little stuff he shouldn't be focusing on causes that whole "butterfly flaps its wings" thing. This causes people meeting with you to not want to look bad so they make their teams put together insane stuff and have it explained to them (because they don't understand) which makes them ask their team, which makes a director as a manager, then a manager and their team to do the work.
    2. Its ok if people don't know everything, but why is your upper team so scared to say "I don't know"? Better yet, if you need a real detailed answer, speak to the people actually doing the work.
    3. Your C-level team does not carry your message the way you do. They come off as slave drivers who don't care about the associates, which then leaves everyone to think you sent that message.I really hope you don't

    Pros

    They have lots of money in the bank, it would take years to shut this company down, things are more stable as a result than other companies. If you can tolerate the BS, it pays the bills.

    Cons

    SVP's are not aligned - there is chaos at the top, many SVP's openly dislike their peers, makes life miserable for those beneath, not a good time to sign up with this company.

    Advice to Management

    Analysis paralysis is killing this company - stop asking for multiple iterations of power point presentations, and make some decisions.
