I worked at Bob's Discount Furniture full-time for less than a year

Pros

Money opportunity , possible advancement, Good benefits, Very nice showroom, Zero tolerance for violence, cleanliness, OK atmosphere managers and sales people were friendly , selection of Bedding and furniture , and Rentacenter kiosk.

Cons

Lack of sales and floor rules enforcement. Payscale average. upper level advancement, Safety- some accessories and furniture items were precariously set for display. Even though I gave atmosphere as a [ pro] there were still arguements and bad language issues that went unchecked by managment. This was in comparison to other retail stores I had worked for. One on one's between managers and sales people were brief, not alot of coaching and role play. SAP system was hard to work with. It was originally designed for NASA and should have stayed there.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enforce sales and floor rules. More 1 on 1 training. Improve and streamline SAP.

I have been working at Bob's Discount Furniture full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Being treated like a second rate citizen if that is your gig.

    Cons

This company used to be a family atmosphere where most everyone was treated fairly and pulled for one another. Everyone it seemed was helpful. There were exceptions of course. Since being sold to APAX about 6 years ago, Bob and the original ownership group have been rendered inconsequential.

CEO English and his band of sicko-phants (spelling on purpose) have managed to take a once proud and arguably the best and fastest growing furniture retailer in the country and turn it into a laughing stock. Hiring upper and middle management that have no idea about furniture and run the organization like a five and dime chop shop.

The furniture while once on the upswing as far as quality, based on Bob Kaufman and Stan Adelsteins original formula of bettering the quality of furniture offered as revenue increased, has been replaced with the well known philosophy of "stick it to the consumer" with worse quality furniture than 15 years ago. This has been necessitated by horrible decisions from corporate; from the ridiculous operating system instituted in 2010 which has cost the company upwards of $100 million dollars since and has alienated thousands of once loyal customers with horrible beyond belief deliveries that arrive shattered or not at all because of continued system glitches to just plain old GREED.

On top of all of this, the company just spent $250,000 on a union busting organization due to many stores voting to be represented by a workers union. This came about due to mismanagement and the inability or the ignorance of calculating commissions correctly. There is no doubt in my mind that many salespeople were getting screwed out of their hard earned commissions and still are. The new operating system was designed to hide away once transparent numbers that were available for all to see and helped to create a healthy competitive environment that was actually fun to work in as a salesperson and as a manager. Now the secrecy in everything the company does has created an environment of distrust and unhappiness throughout.

If you are looking for a company where upper management is divided and dislikes and distrusts one another, where lurid secrets and affairs abound, cover-ups on unethical and unsavory behavior by some managers and corporate officers are orchestrated by human resources, then this is the company for you. Otherwise let this company sink without getting on board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To store managers and sales managers that are from the furniture industry - find another job before they force you to.

I worked at Bob's Discount Furniture full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Pre-2006 they were a wonderful family friendly company that was a joy to work for. Pay was fantastic and the enviorment though high pressure was fun. Original ownership and upper management were supportive and really made a difference.
They developed the talent pool and and promoted the stand outs who paid their dues.
Post- 2006 the company sold 70% to apex and they brought in upper management and ceo from non furniture industries.

    Cons

Post-2006 the company slowly started to change for the worse. Every Wedensday for about 6 months we called "doomsday" because another "bob's guy" bit the dust . We lost some really good people a long the way. Some though deserved to be replaced but not in the ruthless manor it was handled. In 2008 the new vp of sales " from a cd sales company" and the ceo "from a clothing and nick nack chain started bringing in more of the good ole' boys from thier former places of leadership and handing them high paying upper management positions. This without any furniture experience at all. epic fail. Soon the company was a battleground filed with self promoting chest pounders who did nothiing but steal money from the company for thier pathetic ethics and judgement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of Ted and Ron's great adventure and bring in real furniture pro's who can re-shape and save the sinking ship that is Bob's.
