I have been working at Bob's Discount Furniture full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

You can earn a descent living if you are aggressive on the sales floor and they do allow 4 day work weeks.

Cons

-Promotions are based on who your friends with in upper management instead of performance and talent. Many sales managers are former employees of a company called Trans World or friends of Trans World employees that now work for Bobs.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should care more about their employees. All they care about is making their bonus and they often make decisions based on emotions instead of facts. If Bobs didn't flood the sales floor it would make the store more inviting to our customers, customers constantly make jokes and observations referencing how many employees we have in the store at one time.

    Pros

    Free drinks, ice cream and cookies
    Nice discount on furniture
    Good benefits including loan program, EAP
    Pleasant co-workers
    Decent bonus if store meets it's monthly goals

    Cons

    Awful HR department
    Pay is low
    Inconsistent discipline of employees
    Lack of advancement
    Favoritism given to top sales associates even when major company policies are broken
    Expectations for management is above the norm of other retailers, the company terminates very quickly
    The systems and information needed to be successful is not like other retailers: lot of computer knowledge, need to understand Bob's system
    Pay increases may be 1% or 2%, even if your store is successful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Managers should be given a chance to adapt to Bob's systems. I worked for a number of other retailers and the time spent on the computer and other tasks is far greater. Although the managers hired are seasoned, there is no time given for managers to fully understand the Bob's way. The turn over rate for managers in the DMV area is very high and most managers are terminated within sixty days without major violations of company policies. Associates are given more consideration even if they arrive more than twenty minutes late or is insubordinate to managers. The culture has become one where if the associate knows they'll be given a warning, they'll call or send a letter to HR and because the company is afraid of lawsuits, they will not reprimand the associate. So many good managers have lost there jobs because the company holds them responsible for the employees actions. If you like going to work everyday with the mindset that it could be your last day, this is the company for you ( they don't always investigate and will not tell the manager they are being investigated).

    Company is way more concerned about bottom line figures than the associates and customers experience.

    Pros

    Great place to work if you are lazy and want to do just enough to earn an okay living.

    Cons

    Showroom is flooded with salespeople, and at times you may only see 3 to 6 customer during a day's shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take feedback from staff more seriously, and hold individuals accountable, not the staff as a whole.
