Current Employee - Systems Safety Engineer in Colorado Springs, CO
Recommends
Approves of CEO

Pros

Definitely the benefits are top notch. Pay was pretty good considering the job. Fellow co-workers and management were generally caring and supportive. For those who enjoy a teaming environment, it's one of the better places to work. Excellent educational benefits (paid in full in critical business areas).

Cons

Slow promotions and career advancements were either not clearly defined, not managed properly or not in place at all. Sometimes work can be slow and have to fight motivation to stay busy

Advice to Management

Recognition of employees achievements and abilities would provide a lot of motivation and encouragement. Too much red tape in many areas that slow work to a crawl sometimes. Overall better support of employees' desires to "climb the corporate ladder" needs to be made clear and understood. The company promotes "One Boeing" concept when in fact each location has completely different policies or policies are enforced differently.

Former Employee - Real Time Software Engineer in Huntington Beach, CA
    Doesn't Recommend
    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Boeing provides relatively good benefits when comparing with other defense companies. There are pockets of high-performing, very productive teams. If you can find a manager who cares, there is great opportunity to advance quickly.

    Cons

Boeing is slow to react to change, no matter how beneficial the change may be. This is especially true in software, where "process change" is a bad word until a highly-paid consultant suggests it. Pockets of inept management. Poor infrastructure and tool set provided to software engineers. Often very little opportunity for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Encourage and reward exceptional performance. Ensure that your employees are paid competitively before they get an offer elsewhere. Hire employees to do more than just fill a seat; specifically, hire software engineers to build software and ensure that your systems engineers are involved at all stages of development. Give your software engineers the tools that they need to do their job efficiently.
