I have been working at Boeing

Pros

Boeing has fabulous benefits and makes great products. Other companies make important things, too, but I can put my hand on an airplane or a satellite and say, "I helped make that." The sense of pride and accomplishment when a new plane takes off, or a new rocket blasts away, is worth everything.

Cons

Stifling bureaucracy and red tape make it very difficult to get real changes implemented. Far too much time is spent over "corporate masturbation" initiatives (LEAN is the big one right now). Senior management also likes to push employees to take ethics training, in spite of repeated unethical behavior. There's also a clear dichotomy within Boeing--if you're a designer, they want to keep you. If you're an operations person, they want to outsource you. Keeping only the "thinking" people and getting rid of all the "doing" people has contributed directly to where the company is right now, gazing into its own navel.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to cost-cut your way to profitability. You're scaring away the people you need to keep.

I have been working at Boeing

    Pros

Benefits package. Full, up-front, unlimited tuition payments to any school, as long as it is job related. 401(k) matching, 75% up to 8% of base pay. Cutting edge technology. Great work/life balance.

    Cons

Bureaucratic, cyclical hiring/layoffs, aging workforce. Development of younger employees is lacking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to do a better job of developing younger employees. Management is getting old and is going to start shifting up, need young employees to fill the entry level management voids.

    I worked at Boeing

    Pros

Large company --- lots of opportunities to move laterally, as well as advance up. If you're a strong performer, there is good recognition and reward.

    Cons

Departments are oftentimes silos. So you can get real depth in your specific function, but not as much breadth of skills as you would get at a smaller company. Also had frustration with the number of audits/outside consultants coming in, to basically tell management what was already obvious or known by the "workerbees."
