I have been working at Boeing

Pros

Boeing has fabulous benefits and makes great products. Other companies make important things, too, but I can put my hand on an airplane or a satellite and say, "I helped make that." The sense of pride and accomplishment when a new plane takes off, or a new rocket blasts away, is worth everything.

Cons

Stifling bureaucracy and red tape make it very difficult to get real changes implemented. Far too much time is spent over "corporate masturbation" initiatives (LEAN is the big one right now). Senior management also likes to push employees to take ethics training, in spite of repeated unethical behavior. There's also a clear dichotomy within Boeing--if you're a designer, they want to keep you. If you're an operations person, they want to outsource you. Keeping only the "thinking" people and getting rid of all the "doing" people has contributed directly to where the company is right now, gazing into its own navel.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to cost-cut your way to profitability. You're scaring away the people you need to keep.

I have been working at Boeing

    Pros

Boeing is a huge company with many diverse opportunities. Career change is relatively easy, even encouraged in places. The benefits packages are top notch. Total compensation (benefits, 401K, salary, bonus) is competitive. For those with a family to support, this is a great place to work.

    Cons

Senior Management is too far removed from activities of employees. Mediocre/poor workers are bred by the environment in the office. Being a top performer can get you recognized, which is good, but management's inability to trust the, ahem. . .less enthused. . .employees leads to top performers getting over loaded. Company seems to have a hard time retaining younger workers. Average age is probably late 40's - early 50's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management time, at all levels, is taken up by meetings and activities. Large percentage of managers have lost touch with the business activities of the groups they manage. Availability of management can be an issue at times.

I have been working at Boeing

    Pros

Interesesting work. Reasonable pay. Dedicated co workers at the low levels.

    Cons

VERY poor senior management. Mistake after mistake leading to micro managment leading to not taking responsibility for anything. Theory X and fear driven.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go away. You will ruin this company. You have driven out all of the previous very talented top management.
