I have been working at Boku full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

For a company that has been around for 4+ years, it amazes me at how extremely non political this place is. Very collaborative open environment, employee development is encouraged, you are definitely given the opportunity to grow.
Smart talented people, some that really believe in the business and the power of impact/change.
Engineering culture is geared to solve problems the right way, emphasis is on quality.

Cons

Not sure of the business vision of the company, management needs to work on it more. This is not a typical 'explosive' valley startup anymore...if you are looking to work at a startup that gets featured in techcrunch all the time..this isnt it.

    Pros

Great, great, great colleagues: very smart, dedicated, friendly, and fun
When the company makes mistakes, it recognizes them and works to fix them
Company is deeply loyal to the employees
Excellent office location in SOMA, San Francisco

    Cons

Not a "hyper-growth" company (ala Facebook, Square, Dropbox); instead, more measured (but steady) growth
What we do is *hard*: there are tough challenges to work through, both technical and business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep communicating; spend a lot of time with employees at all levels. Use MBWA: "management by walking around"

I worked at Boku full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

To be fair, their work/life balance is very good.

    Cons

    - Huge technical debt
    - Bad communication
    - Bad management

Boku had a promising pitch during interviews; the selection process is solid, the people you meet seem smart. However, a couple months into more critical development, you notice how huge their technical debt is how much it holds them back. They have no plan to address it, only a few key people working on it at a turtle's pace and no serious schedule.

They are unprofessional in many manners - late to meetings, don't reply to e-mails and won't pick up the phone to follow up on issues; they change their minds quite often about decisions already discussed at length. No regard for plans, no shred of documentation, and the "hey, this is a start-up" excuse every time the modus operandi is challenged with suggestions... even though they can hardly be considered a start-up, with 200+ staff and offices all around the world.

Instead of being proactive and plan ahead to solve big issues, they just work constantly in "put down the fire" mode. They have on-call duty for engineers, which takes a lot of time, wakes you up several times during the night, and could be improved a lot with small changes and automation of key aspects. However, it takes ages to drive any improvement at boku, unless it comes from certain people within the organization..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to more people, not just the dear ones. It's no surprise you have so many issues, the same people have been working with/on them all along. Don't be afraid of hearing harsh truths; instead, recognize and work to solve problems, not kick the can down the road all the time.
