I worked at Bon-Ton Stores full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Situated in great small population markets. Customers are great. Staff in store is great.

Cons

Pressure to do more with less staff. Customers complain continually about not staffing the sales floor. "I can never find a clerk". Unrealistic expectations from corporate officers to accomplish tasks with no staff. Low pay offerings for new hires limits the quality of applicants.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work a month in a store to see if what you expect is possible.

I worked at Bon-Ton Stores part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Fun co-workers, nice company discount. Flexible hours (if you can get the hours you want).

    Cons

"Training" is a joke. No product training at all in the fine jewelry department. High turnover. Low commission is not a huge motivator. Often there during busy times alone. All black dress code is meant to be "stylish" but it's not. Catty middle managers. Coupon policy is ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either get rid of restrictions on coupons or get rid of the coupons. Losing customers quickly to Kohls and other stores.

Better plan on making work the only thing on your schedule or you're fired.

I have been working at Bon-Ton Stores part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good starting pay.Labor intensive on shipping side.

    Cons

Long hours for second shift during holiday season.
    Work holidays.
    Management not entirely honest.
"Work around your school schedule" means "Work until 6 hours before class starts"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you tell someone you will work around their school schedule, that should not only mean you will not schedule them during the hours they are in class, but they also need time to rest and do homework.
