Books-A-Million Bookseller:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The employee discount and book check-out policies are probably the best two for any serious book-lover. The store is open late, so those of us who are night-owls can work hours more conducive to our schedules.

Cons

Management at the District level on up is rather spotty. Some DMs I have met have been reasonably competent, while others...well, calling them 'grossly incompetent' would be giving them credit. Corporate policies are utterly insensitive to the needs/concerns of employees, causing turnover to be *high*, even among MANAGEMENT. Our store alone has had no less than three out of four manager trainees quit in the last two years. The company has also bought heavily into the Time/Entertainment Weekly/Sports Illustrated/People 'eight free issues' scam, despite the fact that five minutes of thought will reveal that it's bad for the company in the long-term.

Advice to Senior Management

Give up on the magazine scam and actually LISTEN to your employees. Update your store's equipment and take steps to RETAIN the good employees who stumble into working for you. Get anonymous feedback on your management at all levels, and get rid of the incompetent ones.
