Looks good on the outside, overly political and lack of concern for the people

I have been working at Booz Allen Hamilton

Pros

Good benefits, access to smart people, very good learning and dev programs, opportunity for growth--to a point

Cons

Most people will say that since going public, the culture has changed. Focus on staffing and bill ability has always been there though (at least in the last 5 years). Success requires being very politically astute, not questioning mgmt decisions, being billable and being available to work at all hours. Senior management is not really interested, and will not take action, on the feedback of its people. if you're not good at either schmoozing your way to the top, and/or working non-stop, don't plan to make a career with 'The Firm'. Known for lowballing salaries. Work-life balance is an issue at all levels.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to what employees are telling you and take action. Making everyone feel like a commodity to be bought, sold and disposed of is not a smart long term plan. There are incredibly smart people who are leaving in record numbers--pay attention.

A great learning experience in politics in the work place.

    Pros

Opportunity to work with some very smart people at the Associate level and below; great place to work as a second career.

    Cons

Little chance for advancement past the Associate level; very snooty and politically charged culture; business casual dress highly frowned upon; often times lots of pressure to work long hours on personal development time; no discernible career path for people without political connections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with staff about the likelihood for career advancement. Talk with the people who will actually be performing the work before you bid on work for an accurate estimate. Stop the political spin to all employee communications -- we're smart people and we see right through it. Realize that its near impossible to be 100% billable if you are also expected to do marketing and admin duties.

I have been working at Booz Allen Hamilton

    Pros

people are friendly and social, but very cliquey. the staff work pretty hard, and there are smart people around, but that is it

    Cons

it is not a teaching company. much of the business is dependent on carry-on work, therefore management is constantly adhering to the client's every whim, even if it is not a path to the client's optimal success

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

pay attention to your junior staff. teach them. don't play favorites. be fair.
