Very solid company with minor flaws, hope that going public won't change much but fear it will.

Pros

The firm has a very good reputation in the industry. From what I've been told (and not by people within the firm), having the BAH name on your resume makes you extremely marketable to other companies. As others have stated, much of your experience at BAH will be dictated by what team/manager you're assigned to, but I fell like that could be the case with any company you work for. Fortunately I'm on a solid team with excellent management, with a few exceptions (discussed further in cons). My compensation is very fair and I have been recognized through rewards when my work has deserved it. My career has progressed at a very fair pace, and I'm happy with my current opportunities for growth.

Cons

Sometimes leadership makes you feel as though the bottom line is all important, even if it means it negatively effects those working on client site. Although it has gotten better, most of their IT systems are built for access within the firewall, and trying to get access to certain systems from home or client site are extremely difficult or altogether impossible. The assessment processes, despite getting updated every year, is very flawed in my opinion. They're very proud of the 360-degree assessment process, but I feel as though clients see it as a hassle to provide input regarding specific employee competencies as opposed to general statement regarding employee performance.

Good overall, but quite variable, job satisfaction is entirely dependent on manager, project, and role

I worked at Booz Allen Hamilton

    Pros

    1. High quality consultants with a good work ethic. In particular, the backbone of the firm, the experienced client-facing Associates and Senior Associates, are (overall) of excellent quality
    2. Fair compensation, generous raises upon promotion to the next level. Moderately clear performance review process, 360 degree
    3. Many projects are good, challenging, beneficial experiences, even if they achieve only mixed results
    4. IT and other support services were quite competent and very supportive of client-facing staff

    Cons

    1. More like multiple small firms than one big firm, each Partner sets their own tone & culture. Internal team territorial squabbles; good/qualified people on supporting teams may be transitioned off of larger projects to make way for mediocrities that are on the incumbent Partner's team
    2. Sometimes they don't walk the talk, internal team communication and structure could be much better. This is entirely dependent on the policies/tone of the team leadership
    3. In general, office politics regarding work assignments can be very intense
    4. Many "rain-makers" brought in at the high level, so the promotion path for the excellent Associates, especially the client-facing ones, is not nearly as good as advertised (I should point out that this was not my situation, but that of several older, highly qualified colleagues)
    5. 360 degree assessment process (with no smart filtering) encouraged a culture of "excessive niceness" and sometimes minimal honesty

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Enhance knowledge sharing across teams
    2. Focus on long term value (winning business because of consistently excellent prior performance) rather than quick wins or "Political Wins"
    3. Work to enforce common understanding of firm-wide Booz Allen Hamilton policies and procedures, as many teams free-lance their implementation/enforcement, to the detriment of the new and junior consultants/senior consultants
