I have been working at Booz & Company

Pros

Continuous growth, "sink or swim" approach
International footprint and staffing model
CEO with vision and clear growth strategy
Ambitious "start-up" with the legacy of a 100 year old firm

Cons

Travel can kill, most of the job is done at client's site
Alumni community and ability to "out-place" is weaker than it should/could be

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a specific strategy to "out-place" the best professionals who decide to leave the firm (very much like competitors do)

I worked at Booz & Company

    Pros

    Brand image (for now)
If your work style is truly autonomous and you have an aggressive attitude towards work, you'll find a home here

    Cons

Ineffective mentoring system (mostly works to reinforce the negative aspects of the culture and can backfire during your own appraisals)
Appraisal system places more emphasis on negative experiences/skills to improve, while down-playing or ignoring positive ones (i.e., the bad was awful, while the good was an outlier)
Staffing is dog-eat-dog, which works against new employees (e.g., spend more time trying to get staffed on appropriate projects than developing your skills through formal training)
Extremely subjective and distorted appraisal reviews (i.e., feedback is captured several months after the fact)
Poor project management skills (i.e., deliverables are rushed without clear timetables and prioritization is rare)
Knowledge management and knowledge transfer is dismal... you either know on your own, or you'll have a hard time finding it in a timely manner -let alone, get some solid advice from seniors... this will likely work against you at appraisal time
Arrogance like I've rarely encountered elsewhere (total turnoff and not conducive to learning... know-it-all attitude in an industry that requires inquisitive minds and questions)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Refer to the Cons list... learn to provide a more supportive environment for learning and be wary of an appraisal system that has lost its objectivity and turned into a witch-hunt; your arrogance will be your downfall...

I have been working at Booz & Company

    Pros

If you like management consulting, this is as good of a place as any - pretty collaborative, good learning opportunities

    Cons

hours, a bit hierarchical at times, not that much strategy work - most of the work is cost cutting or operational redesign

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership needs to be more visible. Sometimes it's hard to get a partners attention. My advice to leaders is to create personal relationships with those at the Associate and Consultant levels.
