I have been working at Boston University full-time for more than a year

Pros

The benefits are good (paid time off is generous). Depending on the office, the work schedule is manageable and expectations are reasonable. There is opportunity to be part of changing culture if you embrace it and ability to maintain work/life balance.

Cons

slow moving. Unlike other universities, does not seem to be as much of an "academic culture" among administrative employees. The organization is not very nimble or fast moving, so it can be frustrating when trying to implement change.

I have been working at Boston University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible working schedule, regular pay increases, wide variety of postions/reponsibilities, some opportunities to advance

    Cons

Overly bureaucratic, disorganized, hierarchical, slow to make adjustments but quick to make huge changes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You don't have to trust your subordinates with what you're working on, but letting us know what you're working on allows us to better deal with the changes you introduce.

Good benefits but management is terrible, with anecdotal exceptions

I worked at Boston University full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Most staff care about what they do. Benefits are great, especially tuition remission and health insurance.

    Cons

Managers get no training or guidance in management or leadership. Some are great because they happened to get good mentorship, but there is nothing in place to ensure that managers & directors are anything other than good worker bees, so that's what most of them are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are promoting someone to a supervisory role, make sure they get the training and support to develop appropriate management skills.
