As a researcher (i.e., non-faculty) you have a lot of freedom but you also have no job security.

Current Employee - Research Scientist in Boston, MA

I have been working at Boston University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Boston is a great city, and BU is centrally located for easy access to downtown or to outlying boroughs. The benefits are pretty good (healthcare + 403b matching).

    Cons

Students everywhere (maybe a pro for some). BU itself does not value the position of research scientist, and so the bureaucracy will make your life more difficult than it needs to be for no good reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Research scientists can take their money elsewhere, it is up to you to make them feel valued and secure.
