    Typical law firm - non-lawyers are second-class citizens. AmLaw 100 wanna-be.

I worked at Bracewell & Giuliani full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Standard law firm benefits, regular pay raises & bonuses. Most non-lawyers qualify for overtime pay. The lawyers are civil - not a lot of screamers. Workload is manageable.

    Cons

As in most firms, the lawyers think of the non-lawyers as "the help," not professionals deserving of respect. They're as polite to you as they'd be to their lawn guy, and are unlikely to acknowledge you if you cross paths outside of the office.

But the bigger issue while I was there was their passionate desire to break into the AmLaw 100. They replaced the good ol' boy managing partner with a Chainsaw Al who tried to convert the firm culture into that of a Fortune 500 corporation. The firm then waged a subtle but relentless campaign to oust the old guard managers & employees, many of whom had been there 25-50 YEARS. No loyalty, barely even the pretense of doing anything other than cleaning house.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Law firms aren't corporations - never have been, never will be. And you're no Skadden - never have been, never will be.

Yes, times change & some new ideas have value. And sometimes you have to remove people who stubbornly refuse to embrace the future. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
