Was a good company yesterday. Today, not so much.

I worked at Briggs & Stratton

Pros

Household name, strong brands and a pretty solid product. Briggs is blessed with some excellent employees. Unfortunately, many (most) of them are not provided enough opportunity to shine.

Cons

Management, management, management! Morale is at the bottom of the barrel and has been there for a long time. People mope around the office like zombies waiting for the clock to strike 4PM. Not a fun place at all.

Stop acting like kings and start acting like you give a dang!

I worked at Briggs & Stratton

    Pros

Above average pay for entry level production work. Freedom to flex your mind (you need to in order to keep the antique production equipment running).

    Cons

HR cares only about their rules. The union local is a joke. The union has no power or money and your fate is dictated by Briggs HR. The ethical and fair HR manager was fired by Briggs for "being too soft" and was replaced by a woman in army boots type with no compassion or sympathy for working class families. The company is slow moving and constantly being undercut by foreign competition due to Briggs lack of willingness to embrace technology and the attitude that if it is made wrong, make it work anyway. Instead of holding vendors to tolerance on parts, they adjust their production methods to accommodate whatever garbage comes in the door. I give Briggs a maximum of 10 years to keep production in Milwaukee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the current HR regime, and change Briggs and Stratton back into the family orientated company you claim to be. HR does not care how well employees perform, they only worry about how well your index number follows the (ridiculous) rules (that's right readers, you are a number at Briggs, and they care more about your number than your name). Next contract (if by some miracle you make it to another contract), don't again hire a union buster law firm to handle contract negotiations and work with the people you claim to care about.
