Current Employee - Senior Staff IC Design Engineer in San Jose, CA

I have been working at Broadcom full-time for more than a year

Pros

This review is for the Analog Group @ broadcom
1. Opportunity to work on a variety of circuit blocks - ADCs, DACs, filters, power management ICs within the same group.
2. Good interaction with system guys
3. Latest CAD tools and awesome support
4. Highly risk tolerant -- size up engineers and give them opportunity to shine without them having to put in years of grunt work.

Cons

1. Aggressive schedules - designer expected to do layout as well.
2. No sense of chip ownership since group delivers only IP.
3. Group operates like a service group and doesn;t share in the profits of the final product. (the system team does).
4. No ethnic diveristy in group - 90% asian.

    Pros

    - Engineering-focus makes decisions a lot faster
    - Easy to get access to tools needed to develop products
    - Exposure to fast-growing Mobile market

    Cons

    - HR policies need to be more formalized and driven
    - Company needs to move from "startup" mode as it grows
    - Company needs to invest in community relationships and charity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Communication to lower levels needs to be through formal means, rather than cofee-machine talk
    - Invest in development processes and soft skills development
    - Invest in Community, outside of Science & Technology. e.g. reward volunteering, reading to kids
