Current Employee - Principal Applications Engineer in Irvine, CA

I have been working at Broadcom full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Engineers are highly technical and smart. Management knows the market well. Pay is above average for the market. Best-in-class solutions for the markets they participate in.

Cons

Not easy for upwards mobility or switching to different departments. They tend to hire very experience people that do not require more training. Layoffs are sudden.

I have been working at Broadcom as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

You learned a lot as an intern, you have the chance to access many cutting-edge wireless technology here

    Cons

You do not meet your manager often, they are always busy and most of time you have to take care of your own. You don't attend group meeting as an intern.

I have been working at Broadcom full-time

    Pros

If nothing else, the people who work at Broadcom are the best. They are intelligent and incredibly hard working. My group always delivers no matter the deadline and no matter the complexity of the project.

    Cons

The workload is incredible and the compensation seems below average. It is borderline an immigration house mainly because immigrants with phd's are willing to work like this for their green cards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle and lower management are in the trenches and are highly respected, but upper management tries too hard to be salient with their employees because of an overpowering HR department. Upper management should just compensate the hell out of employees and don't try any of the bureaucratic team building events that are plagues from HR. Their attitude regarding compensation is we do this because everyone else does this. That's not the mentality of a leader or an innovator. The technology is innovative, but the management is as average as can be. I consider broadcom management a cookie cutter example of sustainers vs growers where broadcom management are the former.
