Former Employee - Store Manager in Orlando, FL

I worked at Brown Shoe full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

If you are motivated, as a manager you can make a good salary. Great employee discount program.

    Cons

    Everything else.
    1. Extremely limited payroll leads to lack of floor coverage
    2. Sneaky business practices that takes benefits from the employee's. Weeks of vacation taken off. Work for 14 years and only get 3 weeks of vacation. Take sick time off of partial paid, remove easter as a holiday thats paid even though only a handful of stores are required to be open that day. Saw employee's get not a penny in raise for a year. Raises are not based on merit. You get the same as the person who doesn't give a crap about their job. List can go on and on.
    3. Ridiculous rules that seem to oblige their needs. One employee, while on video attacks another physically, with no provoking. Said employee is charged by the police and is sentenced in court. That employee was not fired.
    4. Unbelievable skyrocketing benefits program. Don't look to their health care benefits unless you want to pay high deductables, a significant portion of the bill and a astronomical amount of money every month for a family plan.
    5. Forced managers to hire lesser quality people willing to work lesser hours to save them the half an hour that a higher quality worker would need for more hours and a lunch break.
    6. Puts store employee's in bad situations. One store runs a bogo plus 20 percent off. Another store 1 mile away isn't allowed to honor this promotion. If customer gets angry about it you are NOT allowed to allow it for them, but YOU are at fault if they don't leave happy.
    7. There is a reason why lost their Senior Vice President quit after only one year.
    8. There is a reason why they sued their Divisional President of wholesale for taking another job after he quit Famous.
    9. If you become injured at Famous Footwear, expect to be blackballed and soon to be terminated or at very least never promoted.
    10. It doesn't matter how successful you are as a leader you will eventually be moved out for someone who is willing to do the job cheaper.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. Obviously with the way your stock prices have risen you know exactly what your doing. Even though you competitors are kicking your butt in comparitive sales, you know exactly what your doing. Obviously with how terrible your profit loss is over the last two years you are running a steamboat headed to victory.
