I have been working at Brown and Caldwell

Pros

They have some of the best experts in the field and have a tremendous amount of knowledge to learn from. Not too large that things get complicated and resources are lost. Somewhat laid back and easy going.

Cons

High demand for 100% billability. Always busy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow more time for on the job training. Reduce billability requirements.

I have been working at Brown and Caldwell full-time

    Pros

Everyone I have worked with at this company on projects has been generally good to work with. There is a ton of information available on the employee website to provide guidance to a wide range of technical issues. They have provided an efective networking tool to help get anyone's problems solved using the collective knowledge of the companies employees. It has been a great learning experience.

    Cons

Management puts a large amount of emphasis on having the work force provide the ultimate client service experience while at the same time comming down hard on anyone that goes over the alloted hours to complete the work. This promotes swetshop mentality. I have put in many free hours of work to provide top level service only because there is not enough budget remaining to get the work done correctly. (this is true of 60% of the many projects I have so far been involved) - For some reason the family health insurrance plan is 3X more expensive here than it was at my previous company. Make sure you understand the cost of this companies health insurrance before weighing your offer against others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

1.BC has too many acountants. 2. Providing a one dollar raise to each person who gets a PE license while employed by BC is a joke. 3. This company is top heavy-get higher level engineers more involved with the lower level tasks to get everyone understanding that engineering always involves unforseen problems that take longer to resolve than intially thought. 4. The standard specifications provided by BC and used across the country are a rambling mess. They need to be condensed down to what is important- smart knowledgable engineers have trouble understanding allot of this content. .
