I have been working at Butler University as an intern (more than an year)

Pros

Embrace student work balance. Allow freedom of projects and working hours per week. I worked in many offices during my time as an undergraduate. Depending on department, some really enjoy students and will invest in you as a person, not just look to get the most work in the smallest amount of time. Very nice people.

Cons

Slow to change anything, can be disorganized. Some times there will be too much work and it becomes overwhelming, other times there is too much down time.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more time to understand the roles of each office

I have been working at Butler University part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Faculty have a great deal of freedom of what is presented in the classroom and there is a great deal of effort to have courses which are integrated in each courses content.

    Cons

As is true in any organization the bureaucracy can make it difficult to gain the necessary approvals for changes in the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is important to gather the views of all of the constituents including students/faculty/staff.

I worked at Butler University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fellow advisors have all studied abroad, very internationally minded, a lot of fun to work with. Travel overseas about every 6 months. Working with students who are studying abroad for the first time can be inspiring.
Opportunities for personal development through education credits and professional associations.

    Cons

Corrupt system. Upper management is slow to change and blames errors on people who are below them. Information flow within the organization is chaotic, repetitive and unclear. Rather than addressing issues of poor job performance they ignore it and later blame advisors for the fact that management was unaware of the problem (even if they had been told). Promises are not always kept.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not create new positions for people just because they have been there for so long, only create a position if it is truly needed.
Step up an address problems as they arise, don't ignore them and then act surprised when they become too big to ignore.
