I have been working at C&S Wholesale Grocers full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For an area with very limited options, C&S offers a relatively secure job. If you keep your head down and do your job, you can rely on being there a long time.

    Cons

Because there are limited options in the Keene area, C&S takes advantage of good, hard-working, talented people by asking for more and more work without compensating them fairly for the work they do. Employee moral is currently very low, people are unhappy and frustrated, and many good employees are looking for work elsewhere.

C&S continues to promote upper-management (Directors, VPs, Sr VPs) including pay increases and bonuses, while leaving the people who do the day to day work with little to no salary increases or room for professional growth. "Raises" in 2013 were not even enough to account for a cost of living increase, much less the increase in health insurance cost that most employees had to cover.

They also continue to eliminate positions and either not fill them, or bring in high-cost contractors to fill the roles. They are not building an environment where people can grow in their careers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your star employees with more than words. People need to be passionate about their jobs, but the reality is that people work because they need the paycheck.

Stop firing employees and bringing in contractors to replace them.

Stop telling people they're doing a great job, but give no raise to compensate them appropriately for their hard work (while paying for 20+ employees to go to PA and stay overnight to build a playground). Pay people the going market rate for the work they do; C&S salaries for most positions fall $10-$20K short!

Stop filling the company ranks with expensive upper management. Use your dollars to reward your core of hard workers with higher salaries, give them more responsibility (which they ask for and are not given) and bring in lower cost admins to take over the day-to-day tasks.
