Former Employee - Associate Customer Portfolio Manager  in  Saint Louis, MO
Former Employee - Associate Customer Portfolio Manager in Saint Louis, MO

    Pros

Pays well. Nice co-workers. Work is fulfilling and you feel like you are making a contribution.

    Cons

With a RIF every 18 months, employees are always wondering who is next to be let go. Must be connected to stay, performance is not an indicator. Employees are here a short time (less than 3 years) or a long time (over 10 years). Under performing Managers get switched to new positions while the people under them are let go. Hard to take vacation time.

This is where your accomplishments, efficacy and motivation for collaboration go to get trampled on

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Flexible working conditions (e.g. hours, telecommuting, etc.), decent pay, relatively steady stream of interesting technology from acquisitions.

    Cons

Most of middle management layer lack formal leadership development, short-sighted and out for their own professional gains. Most individual contributors are overworked, under-appreciated and subjected to a culture that does not reward collaboration and a divergent viewpoint. Programs deployed to motivate innovation and innovation are superficial and tools (technology) focused, as opposed to people and culture focused. Inefficient and irrational processes cause talents acquired from small innovative companies to flee. Great products eventually whither and die under poor product management, brand dilution and neglect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop viewing organizational development as throwing more happy hour mixers, deploying a collaboration platform assuming that will automatically get people to collaborate and motivational messaging on writing pads and t-shirts.

Start by taking the "easy" button approach. How does the company make the lives of employees easier. Particularly when employees are expected to do the job of 2 people. Doing more with less is NOT the way. The reality of doing more is inescapable, but how about doing it more efficiently and effectively? Make it "easy" for your employees to be productive, successful, happy and motivated to do more...
