I have been working at CAL State LA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

This place is getting better....finally, thanks to the great new president.

    Cons

Still a lot of work to do with the rank and file faculty and staff. There's a deeply embedded culture of mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Incentivize the innovation and efficiency. Find a way to build in accountability. As long as nobody is responsible, and the buck gets passed along, mediocrity will prevail in the ranks.

I have been working at CAL State LA part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I love working here because no one really pays attention to what you're doing. As a lecturer, I could come and go any time, didn't have to attend in faculty meetings, or come in days you're not teaching. Autonomy is great!!

    Cons

For the amount of education you need, the pay is pretty poor. No one wants to do more than their share. A few new buildings, but the rest of the campus is falling apart. Many of lecture halls are dilapidated, old, and worn. Quite depressing atmosphere. Faculty are not appreciated and are expected to give way more than they receive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think if we all shared one common goal, "what's best for the student", the environment would be much more pleasant to work in. Just half your instructors are part-time. Treat them like you value them - invite them to faculty meetings, include them in discussions, give them a voice, let them vote for things.
