CBS Corp – “Don't Work Here”
Pros
I got an offer to work at CBS right out of college. They were very enthusiastic in their hiring and recruiting of me, told me that the job had great room for advancement, career opportunities, etc. I did like working with many of the sales executives and station personnel.
Cons
Well first off would be the poor compensation. I had to work two jobs to afford my rent. I also saw a reluctance to promote from within, to give advancement opportunities to entry level employees, and to give raises. We went over a year without a performance review. I was discouraged from taking my vacation time because the office "just couldn't spare me"; but senior management also outright refused to pay me what I was worth. I know people who were denied their personal days because it was a "busy time of year". Turnover was high and we were constantly struggling to pick up the slack left by departing coworkers. It was an awful experience and the worst year of my life.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on retention, on building from within. Offer educational reimbursement, especially when employees are barely making enough money to cover living expenses in a major metropolitan area. Don't make assistants feel like second class citizens.
