I have been working at CBS Interactive

Pros

Great work/life balance
Passionate, smart co-workers
Fair compensation/benefits
Freedom to explore personal interests
Size of the site makes it easier to work with outside parties

Cons

Size and scope of the various Web properties can make coordination difficult between and even within sites

Seems to be cultural struggle between CBS and CNET in certain departments

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The larger CBSi properties especially need to make it easier for users to find the content they're looking for. Search especially needs improvement.

    Boring TV on the Web

    Pros

CBS is a casual work environment and the Interactive division has retained some of its .com roots. The engineering teams do have some very bright and motivated individuals.

    Cons

The parent CBS company is clueless as to how to run an Internet company. Every project is pathetically under resourced. The sites are falling behind the progression of the Internet and are so heavily loaded with ads the user experience awful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Internet is no longer "New Media." Stop tying to apply a dying broadcast business model to an Internet entity.

Good Opportunity to Learn New Things (It's always changing) But Lack of Timely Goal Setting

I have been working at CBS Interactive

    Pros

Ever changing (can't get bored here)
    Colleagues are great
Relaxed atmosphere within some of the business units
    Great location (SF)

    Cons

    Ever changing (can't establish long-term goals/prioritize projects)
Too many cooks in the kitchen
Since CBS bought CNET, it's not as relaxed/there's a definite culture war
Also, since CBS bought CNET, the HR department has been AWFUL - constantly screwing up vacation times, benefits, etc. no one takes responsibility when employee data is messed up and needs to be fixed
Company intranet is an absolute mess - no clear employee directories, no updated information (worse yet, inaccurate/outdated information is still up there)
Since the merger, CNET employees still can't see CBS employees' calendars in Outlook (impossible to schedule meetings)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get HR in working order - it's a disaster.
Set definitive goals for the company early in the year (not after a quarter's gone by) and stick with the plan. Make sure they are effectively communicated.
Make site engineering more flexible so updates/redesigns to the sites can be swifter
