Could have been a great place

General Manager (Former Employee) Rockford, IL

ProsLatitude given in decsion making, pay was good, days off given was fair and the job itself was rewarding. Helping train disadvantaged youth was the highlight of the position. One of the main duties was helping to organize and run Youthbuild part of construction company. This was very challenging and in retrospect, very rewarding. The sucesses with some of the youth made everything else worth putting up with.

ConsPoor management structure, financing in bad shape, no direction when I arrived. This was a for profit arm of a non profit and the non profit did almost nothing to support the for profit. When I arrived it had lost money in 8 of the last 10 years. The view of management at the non profit is that this had been a sort of piggy bank for the non profit. Therefore the construction company had been stripped of it's ability to grow had it been given the chance. This was unfortunate as the company could have been a mid level player in the area market.

Advice to Senior ManagementHard to say where to begin with the economic climate at it is now. The company should be restructured as a green company and probably non-union as the wage scale was too much of a burden for the company to sustain. With the current climate as of this feedback (early 2010) closing the doors and restarting when the economy picks up may be the best bet.
