I have been working at CDC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great networking opportunity. You get to work with world renowned scientists. Interesting lectures, seminars, and conferences.

    Cons

Dry, stressful, unfriendly environment. Senior scientists lack interpersonal and communicacion skills to *manage* others. FTEs work mostly from home, so it's contractors' responsibility to get things done. Whether you become an FTE depends exclusively on politics, not on your hard-work and accomplishments. Management will not stand up for those who are expendable, even in situations where a supervisor clearly cross the line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Having incompetent and abrasive scientists as supervisors results in decreased productivity and discourages young, talented professionals from pursuing a career at the CDC. Hiring practices need to be revised to keep those who do the work and fire those who don't even show up to work.

I worked at CDC as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Valuable real world experience not available at other companies. The feel good feeling of knowing that you work has the potential to effect so many lives.

    Cons

Rules and regulations often stiffen out the valuable contribution of all of CDC's staff including the contractors that have acquired years of experience and institutional knowledge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to hire your contractors and capitalize on there experience and institutional knowledge. it will enhance and stabilize your workforce and reduce the animosity in the work force. Having temporary periods for staff to start out as contractors with an opportunity to be hired as full time staff. Adopting such procedures would build pride and maximize the impact of valuable employees while weeding out those who don't fit the agencies mold.
