It all depends on the family you work with

I have been working at CDSS part-time (less than an year)

Pros

If a family you know personally chooses you, then you can avoid most of the red tape.
You can accept or turn down clients to work with, and you pretty much arrange everything through the family.
If it's a great family, it's a wonderful experience.
When you sign up for direct deposit, you get your paychecks promptly.

Cons

You have to go to an orientation and fill out paperwork, and pay for a livescan.
It takes 4-6 weeks from signing up until you receive your pay stubs to fill out. So you can either wait to work until the first one comes, or you can work without getting paid for a month and then get a big paycheck for that whole period.
Families might flake out on you, and there's not much you can do about it.

    I worked at CDSS

    Pros

If you need income and are not a hopeless screw-up you can find work as a caregiver. If you are serious about the job there is a lot of opportunity to do some real good out there.

    Cons

Low pay, no benefits. This was not even a legally protected occupation until last year, meaning no matter how many hours you worked you were never eligible for overtime pay. Also Caregiving is the most prone-to-injury occupation in the US, it's really easy to get burned out because the downside to there always being available work is that there is ALWAYS available work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the 33 hour training course offered in 2010 as soon as you can. It taught me a lot about the responsibilities of ethics inherent to this job that many of my peers that came after the class stopped just have no understanding of.

    Pros

work with people that are confident and professional

    Cons

not enough benefits for all employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

better oversight for employees and their benefits because the state budget is constantly coming up short every fiscal year and employers have to keep fighting for higher equality that is satisfactory and can help support and maintain a living wage for all employees that work for Ihss and employees that are apart of the union as a whole.
